Ethernet I/O: EtherStax ® Series

Description
These EtherStax I/O units provide a rugged,
high-density, and high-speed solution to interface
analog output signals. Each unit provides 16
high-level analog voltage outputs to control
various industrial devices.
Typical applications include driving indicators,
display devices, and chart recorders. The outputs
can also control variable speed drives, solenoid
valves, motors, positioners and other actuators.
Another common use is for re-transmission of
analog signals to remote SCADA, PLC, or DCS
systems.
EtherStax units are built and tested for high reli-
ability and dependable performance in hostile
environments. Available in an aluminum enclo-
sure or as an open circuit board, both formats
stack vertically to maintain a very small footprint.

Description
These modules provide an isolated Ethernet
network interface for up to six input channels.
Multi-range inputs accept signals from a variety
of sensors and devices. High-resolution, low
noise, A/D converters deliver high accuracy and
reliability. 3-way isolation further improves the

These modules provide an isolated Ethernet
interface for any input/output mix of up to 16
discrete signals. Inputs sense the status of dry
contacts, switches, power supplies, and DC logic.
Industrial-grade units have eight 32-bit counters
with timers, alarms, and non-volatile memory for
metering, totalizing, and low-frequency periodic
measurement. The outputs control solid-state
switching of lamps, horns, and other devices.

These modules provide an isolated Ethernet
network interface for analog and discrete I/O
signals. Multi-range analog inputs and outputs
support a wide variety of industrial devices. High-
resolution, low noise, A/D and D/A converters
deliver high accuracy and reliability. 3-way isola-
tion further improves system performance. The
discrete I/O provide monitoring and control of
on/off, high/low, or open/close industrial devices.
Tandem I/O provides output level control and
status verification in one unit.
The i2o function lets inputs on one module write
directly to outputs on another module.

Description
Acromag’s Modbus C Library software greatly
simplifies development of programs to inter-
face with Acromag’s BusWorks ® and EtherStax ®
Ethernet I/O products. The library also supports
any standard Ethernet Modbus slave device that
communicates via Modbus TCP/IP or UDP/IP
protocol. This utility is ideal for developers that
are unfamiliar with Modbus protocol or the
framing of TCP/IP or UDP/IP messages.
The C library makes programming easy and
portable by simply linking user code with the
provided function calls (below). Most function
calls require passing only a few parameters such
as the IP address, Modbus register address, and
register count.

Example Program
The included example program is menu-driven
to help users build Modbus TCP/IP and UDP/IP
commands. Menu selections let users configure,
read, and write Ethernet I/O slave devices such as
Acromag’s BusWorks and EtherStax products.
Users may also leverage this demonstration
application into a tool for configuration or test
by supplying commands and/or data values in the
form of a text file. The program will execute each
command in the text file as if it had been typed
from the console terminal.

for use in industrial applications. Rugged con-
struction and a variety of security features ensure
reliable operation under demanding conditions.
Internal inligence enables “connect and go”
operation for fast and easy network installation
with auto-negotiation of data rate, flow control,

EIS-358: 8-port (Cu), redundancy, unmanaged

I Description
This signal conditioner is a four-channel analog
input module with four discrete outputs. It
provides isolation between input, output, power,
and network circuits. Network communication
adheres to the industry-standard RS-485 Modbus
RTU protocol. AC and DC power sources are
supported with nonpolarized, diode-coupled
terminals.
The inputs accommodate wide DC voltage or
current ranges. Flexible discrete outputs operate
as alarms or on/off controllers. As limit alarms,
each discrete output can be configured with high
and/or low setpoints exclusively tied to an analog
input channel. Alarm trips function without host
communication enabling low-cost stand-alone
alarms, as well as local backup for the primary
control system. Otherwise, on/off control is
based on commands issued by the host system.
Combining flexible transmitter functions, mixed
signal I/O, alarm support, and a network inter-
face in a single package, makes this instrument
extremely powerful. Multi-channel design adds
cost-efficiency and allows high-density mounting.
Plus, safe, rugged construction makes these
modules reliable for use in both control room
and distributed field I/O applications. Custom
module configurations are also possible (consult
factory for details).

and linearizes thermocouple inputs while provid-
ing isolation between input, output, power, and
network circuits. Cold junction compensation
and upscale/downscale sensor break detection
are standard. AC and DC power sources are sup-
ported with nonpolarized, diode-coupled termi-
nals.
The programmable inputs accommodate eight
thermocouple types plus wide-range millivolt
signals. Flexible discrete outputs operate as
alarms or on/off controllers. As limit alarms, each
discrete output can be configured with high
and/or low setpoints exclusively tied to an analog
input channel. Alarm trips function without host
communication enabling low-cost stand-alone
alarms as well as local backup for the primary
control system. Otherwise, on/off control is
based on commands issued by the host system.
Combining flexible transmitter functions, mixed
signal I/O, alarm support, and a network inter-
face in a single package, makes this instrument
extremely powerful. Multi-channel design adds
cost-efficiency and allows high-density mounting.
Plus, safe, rugged construction makes these
modules reliable for use in both control room
and distributed field I/O applications. Custom
module configurations are also possible (consult
factory for details).
